The importance of work ethic goes without saying. We are all aware that success comes from putting in the necessary time and effort, and that could not be more true when it comes to athletics at the University of Guam. But many individuals are unaware that hard work does not end when you leave the gym or the playing field, especially when you are a student-athlete.

Behind-the-scenes labor is equally crucial. and here at the University, the coaches and staff focus on preparing student-athletes for their futures both mentally and physically. This article discusses the importance of behind-the-scenes labor for student-athletes during and after training.

How Do You Handle Class and Studying?

Student-athletes, like the rest of us, frequently wake up exhausted, but the most successful ones—like the Lady Triton’s Volleyball Team in this story— learned a few life lessons while attending the University of Guam.

They discovered that cultivating a dynamic mentality is the key to finding the “balance” that our culture obsesses over in terms of life, education, hobbies, and challenges.

Rebecca Salas, a middle blocker and outside hitter for the Lady Triton’s Volleyball Team, revealed how she achieves and maintains balance in her life.

Rebecca Salas, middle blocker and outside hitter for the Lady Triton’s Volleyball Team. Mangilao, Guam, Monday, February 27, 2023.

“I focus on school when I am not on the court. On motivated days, I study before, between, and after my classes. When I know my coursework for the following week, I space out my work to allow myself free time for leisure activities like social media, shopping, and more volleyball,” said Salas.

How Do You Take Care of Yourself?

When you are a student-athlete, it can be easy to get swept up in the excitement of training and competition. But even though their training sessions are exhilarating, they still need to push themselves physically and mentally in preparation for times when they need to perform at their best.

If they want to succeed, practice isn’t something they should only do when it is convenient or expected of them; it needs to be a regular part of their routine.

One vital aspect of behind-the-scenes work is taking care of their bodies.

Georgette Mateo, a middle blocker for the Lady Triton’s Volleyball Team, gave us her take on how she incorporates external preparation alongside her required training sessions.

“I make a conscious choice to not indulge in unhealthy beverages or food, especially if I know that I’m going to be doing any training or workout. I make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day and try to consume more electrolytes to keep myself hydrated,” Mateo said. “However, I feel that it’s important to have a healthy relationship with food and if I want to seek out a burger from Wendy’s or McDonald’s, I will not feel bad about it.”

At the End of the Day, Why is it Important to Enjoy the Behind-The-Scenes Process?

As a student-athlete, it is important to remember that success is not just about winning or achieving your goals. It is also about taking pride in every step while you are endeavoring behind-the-scenes and embracing the process. If you can enjoy the journey and the fruits of your labor then you will find fulfillment in being an athlete.

The UOG Triton Athletics program inducted six former athletes into the Hall of Fame with a reception and basketball game on Oct. 29, 2017 in the UOG Calvo Field House.

The six honorees were John Borden for football, Susan Lupola for women’s basketball, Tommy Morrison for baseball, Hauhouot Diambra-Odi for men’s soccer, Ronald Camacho for football, and Theresa Sison for women’s basketball.

According to UOG Athletic Director Doug Palmer, some of the criteria that the honorees met were that they played for Guam national teams, represented UOG, and played or coached three to four years for UOG sports teams.

“I was asked to give a roster of some names of players and what they have done, but I wasn’t really expecting that I would be the one to be picked,” said Hauhouot Diambra-Odi, one of the inductees, as he reacted after hearing he was on the list of honorees.

“I know my dad’s been part of the University of Guam soccer for a long time, so finally getting recognized for it is pretty cool,” said Jacques Odi, Hauhouot Diambra-Odi’s son.

In the early 1990’s, Odi played for the men’s soccer team for UOG and from 1995 to 1998, he was the head men’s soccer coach for UOG.

Odi also coached the best goalkeeper and the top scorer in the league. In addition, both of Odi’s sons, Jacques Odi and Hauhouot Diambra Odi Jr., were also part of the Guam National Soccer Team.

The event kicked off with a reception where the honorees were able to socialize and enjoy food that was provided. This was followed by a series of short speeches from the honorees.

In his speech, Odi describes his first pair of soccer shoes in his speech as being the brand barefoot which means he used to play soccer barefoot at first.

After the reception, there was a basketball game between the UOG Tritons and the MVP Aces. The UOG Tritons beat the MVP Aces with a score of 123-111 which allowed the UOG Tritons to remain undefeated.

“It was a fun and competitive game going up against several players on the Guam national team,” said Geno Anderson, a point guard for the UOG Tritons. Anderson scored 19 points and seven assists in the game against the MVP Aces.

Theresa Sison, one of the honorees, refereed the Hall of Fame basketball game. During half-time, UOG President Robert Underwood presented each of the honorees with a plaque and a handshake of congratulations.

UOG Athletic Director Doug Palmer said, “The event was carried out exactly as planned, so I was very happy with the execution of the event. I have started two other Hall of Fames at other institutions and this was the same basic plan I had for them. ”

The 2016-2017 academic year had begun with University of Guam revitalizing its sports program.  This revival would give the opportunity for any interested students to join a sport.

One of the selected sports UOG has to offer is soccer. Soccer is a popular sport both on Guam and all over the world. According to Topend Sports Network, an estimated 3.5 billion fans have chosen soccer as the most popular sport world-wide.

If you are a soccer fan, you should already know that the Qatar World Cup is going to be happening in November 2022, so if you are planning to visit Qatar for this event this is the perfect time to start preparing yourself.

Roderick Hidalgo, the newly hired coach for the UOG men and women’s Tritons Soccer teams, believes he is fit to take on the mantle of leading this new Triton soccer team to succession.

Coach Hidalgo has been playing soccer since his first year of high school, which is about thirty years ago. He started coaching right after high school, but is still an active player.  He has experience playing for the Guam National Team and other various clubs.

Through Guam Football Association, Hidalgo was able to get his education in coaching and received a “C” Licence and “B” Licence from the Asian Football Confederation.

“One of my goals is that these guys learn leadership and skills they would not normally learn in the classroom,” Hidalgo said.

He plans to guide the teams into becoming highly competitive, joining the local leagues, and taking top spots in competitions.

Hidalgo also plans to be more involved in the community and start camps, and to be able to invite other universities to partake in tournaments.  It would be a full university experience in sports for his athletes.

Both men’s and women’s soccer teams are still looking for interested players. If you are interested, soccer practices are held Monday to Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m.
