Freshman newbie tips.

You finally made it to the big leagues and your probably asking

yourself “what now?” Adapting into your new college life can be a difficult time for any student. But don’t fret my brothers and sisters because we have all been down that road before. Remember that it’s all part of the learning process. Here are a few tips to get your started.

1. The early bird gets the worm.

In this case, the parking space. If you decide to drive minutes

before class starts, chances are your already late. Make it a habit to show up at least 30 minutes prior.

2. Learn to take good notes.

Good note taking skills is essential. Make the information

you take clear and concise. If you’re lucky , some professors use Power Point in thei r lectures and it doesn’t hurt to ask to download some of them.

3. Apply for FAFSA every year.

If you haven’t realized it by now, textbooks and tuition are expensive. Getting financial aid is a bonus and quite helpful.

4. Create a WebAdvisor account.

Tired of waiting in line to register for next semester?

Creating an account at WebAdvisor enables you to register for classes early. Your WebAdvisor account also keeps track of your classes, grades, and financial status. The link can be found at the University of Guam website.

5. Get an academic advisor.

Whatever degree you decide to pursue in, I can’t stress enough the need of an academic

advisor. They are a type of guidance counselor to keep you in track through all the ruckus

of college life. A great advisor would most likely be a prof essor that specializes in your own track.

6. Register for classes with extra leeway of time in between.

I have found this useful if I wanted to study for test or prepare for a project. Doing this makes you a little more confident and brushes away any unwanted anxiety.

7. Get your devices enabled for Wi-Fi.

You probably noticed that your laptop or tablets can’t get into the universities’ Wi-Fi. What you will need to do is bring them over to the Computer Center. The aides there will get you Internet ready in no time.

8. Get your Student ID.

Your student ID isn’t just for showing off to people you’re

in college now. The library and the computer center actually require it to use some of their services. To obtain your

ID, head towards the Student Center. There you will try to locate the Enrollment Management and Student Services Office. That’s where they make them and it only takes a couple of minutes.

9. Make a payment plan.

Having trouble paying tuition? Go to the Administration Building and create a payment plan. Here they set you up with a monthly plan to pay your tuition in increments. However, they do require at least 10% of your tuition to be paid first. So be prepared.

10. Breathe!

When the weight of assignments and deadlines start taking their toll, remember to breath. It’s important to give yourself a break. Find a positive outlet, like reading or going to the beach with friends.

These are a just a tips to keep in mind when you’re fir st starting off. In time you probably would

have come up with some of your own. Just always remember that you’re not going through this

journey alone.
