Three new murals, which depict scenery unique to Guam, has been recently added to the halls of the University of Guam Calvo Field House.

Artist Constance Sartor, a 23 year old marine biology master’s
student, worked for a total of 20 hours over the course of two weeks during the
current coronavirus pandemic to complete the murals.

A graduate of New College of Florida in Sarasota, Florida, Sartor
has been a student with UOG for a year and a half.

To date, Sartor has painted 25 murals in public and private residences
spanning seven states and territories, with a focus on representing the natural
environment as accurately as possible.

Most of Sartor’s public murals are showcased at
science-related organizations, like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the
NOAA Inouye Regional Center in Hawaii and the UOG Marine Laboratory here on
Guam.

Even before the current lockdown the island is currently
facing, Sartor was determined to finish the murals before the Spring 2020
graduation ceremony.

“Once we found out the graduation was postponed and the field
house may be needed for housing students or patients, I wanted to finish the
mural quickly so that I wouldn’t interfere with those activities,” Sartor said.

Sartor said she usually paints close-ups of plants and
animals. However, she decided to paint landscapes for the Field House.

“I used it as an opportunity to try my first landscape
mural,” Sartor said.

Sartor added: “As a native of Florida, I find the badlands
and mountains in southern Guam scenic and unique. I haven’t seen a mural of the
badlands in Guam, so I decided it would be nice to represent them.”

In the future, there are plans to install live plants in
front of the murals.

“The plants should bring depth to the mural and will really
make the space come to life,” Sartor said.

The three murals are located across the Office of Admissions
and Records and inside the Triton Fitness Center.
