Department of English and Applied Linguistics organized the 29th Annual Regional Language Arts Conference at the Hyatt Regency Guam in Tumon on Nov. 18 and 19. The Guam International Reading Associations sponsored the conference.

Guam IRA is a professional organization that helps educators and parents to discover the world of books. This organization helps individuals who are concerned with the developmental program of reading for adults and children. The Guam IRA strives to work together to improve literacy and reading instruction in Guam and Micronesia. Their mission is to spread awareness and impact reading to all people. Guam IRA strives to make reading as a lifelong habit for younger readers and have a connection to the island’s community through projects and event.

Evangeline Chaco, past president of the Guam International Reading Association, discusses why reading is very important.

“Literacy is essential for everyone because literacy is the composite of reading and writing. It’s essential for our generation. Basically, the kids will replace us,” Chaco said. “They are our future and for our progress to move forward, we need to teach kids basic reading and writing.”

Chaco also talks about the programs sponsorship with the University of Guam and their involvement throughout the years.

“We’ve always assisted and sponsored for the University of Guam every year so it’s an annual event that we participate in.” Chaco said.

The theme of the conference was Reading and Writing Together. Guam IRA had UOG faculty and staff member James Sellmann and guest presenter Margaruite Smith to make a speech and present the program that helps benefit for the teachers and students to teach and improve their reading and writing skills.

James Sellmann, Ph.D., dean of the UOG College Liberal Arts and Social Science discusses about how language is the core activity of the cobaltic human being.

“Everything that we’re about is and ends with the language arts,” said Sellmann.

Sellmann believes that without our native languages, symbolic interactions, cultures and civilizations, mathematics, science, and the love of wisdom would not be possible without the language arts.

Special guest Margaruite Smith, Ed.D, manages textbook sales and teacher training for all the Pacific Islands of Micronesia and U.S. territories presented a PowerPoint presentation and talked about the reading and writing instruction using the Common Core State Standard. State leaders launched this instruction in 2009.

Smith also discussed the keys to building strong readers and writers. Smith hopes that her presentation will help students give the opportunity on what they can succeed  in their reading and writing abilities.

“Students in school really need to have the opportunity to think. It’s not that teachers in the past haven’t made you think, it’s just that now they have standards that they can take a look at that they can use as a road map for thinking skills.,” said Smith.

Chaco hopes for the near future that Guam IRA will take their program moving forward with the use of technology.

“We are acquiring software programs a software that narrates a book, so the kids enjoy that. And as for the adults or high school, we’re looking into ebooks.” Chaco said.

The University of Guam held a Women and Gender Political Candidate Forum at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Lecture Hall on Oct. 26. The forum discussed issues of gender and diversity on Guam.

Senator Judith Won Pat and senatorial candidates Regine Biscoe Lee, Louise Borja Muna, and Amanda Francel Blas, and Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares participated in the forum and answered questions provided by the students of Women and Gender Studies.

Elizabeth Bowman, Ph.D., assistant professor of comparative literature and director of the Women and Gender Studies Center felt that the event was important in fostering an awareness of the issues that women face in society.

“This is a chance in a more intimate environment because we are only having a small number of candidates,” Bowman said. It’s a chance for people to hear about the issues that specially address women and queer people.”

Student moderators Julianne Hernandez and Norielyn O’Connor presented the questions to the candidates.

Questions covered the candidates’ positions on sexual education, paternity leave, breastfeeding in the workplace, educational outreach on the Nana yan Patgon Act, daycare at UOG/GCC, the UOG sexual conduct, women’s reproductive rights, social pressures for LGBTQ, and the island’s political status.

The candidates agreed on all the issues and discussed the problems on what should be resolved.

Senatorial candidate Amanda Francel Blas discussed her support for establishing daycare centers at UOG/GCC.

“I don’t think parents, mom or dad, should have to feel that they have to sacrifice their education. Being a parent isn’t full-time or part-time. It’s all the time. It’s you and I think we should help these parents, who are trying to make a life better for themselves and better for their children.” Blas said, as she continued on what she believes can be provided for students. “This daycare will help benefit, not only the community, but for fellow students and I think that our UOG students will definitely look forward to that. I am sure you want to be the best individual for your child.”

The candidates were also made aware of a recent UOG sexual misconduct case, where a professor is alleged to have sexually assaulted two female students off campus.

Senator candidate Regine Biscoe Lee opened by discussing UOG’s new policy on amorous relations between professors and undergraduate students.

“We want to make sure that we establish relationships between our professors and students and really make sure that’s a very clear cut, so everybody understands going forward,” Blas said .

The event helped inform UOG students on the issues. Bowman expressed that education helps empower women.

Joannah Torres, 20, is a first-year student of the University of Guam. Torres balances academics with a full-time job.

“It’s hard. It’s extremely hard.” Torres said, as she described her busy schedule. “There’s no time for socializing.”

Torres is majoring in business management. She is interested in human resources.

At first, she wanted to just pursue a career in business, but suddenly had a change of heart.

“I want to be able to help people get jobs, protect a lot of employees and learn a lot from

them.”

The inspiration came from the Harvest House, a non-profit organization that cares for orphans through foster care system.

She wants to be involved with children. Torres participated in the Harvest House as part of her community service when she attended Harvest Christian Academy.

Torres took what she has experienced at the Harvest House and hopes to continue to be involved with them. She wants to start organizing events such as 5k runs for children to participate and have companies such as DFS to help sponsor the events.

She is make-up artist at DFS. Before working at DFS, she would have gigs with her sister and friends such as doing their makeup for special occasions. When DFS hired her, she was placed her into a position where she was able to express her creativity with Bobbi Brown.

Torres hopes to one-day work for MAC Cosmetics.

Torres hopes to graduate in four years.

After graduation, within a year or two, Torres would like to take a break from school and work at DFS.

She wants to travel the world within a year or two and hopefully comes back to DFS and continues to be a makeup artist.
