Ten till 2 is a rising Guam-based band that features four primary singers with two holding outstanding music careers.

Managing their everyday lives and being in a band that requires frequent rehearsals to get the sound just right seems difficult, but all the group members find ways to make sure they stay committed to the cause.

Ten till 2 also believes in the foundation of community and the members look for ways to spread awareness on certain topics they find important.

Nia Lim of Agat is one of the bands singers. Lim is a labeled artist of the Philippines who started her career in the early 2000’s. She has released albums and garnered record deals in the peak of her career.

“I believe in music the way some people believe in fairytales,” says Lim.
Lim believes in the influential power of music. She shared as a child, her family would always take the extra effort to promote her talents to the public.

Her father would stay with her while she waited in long lines for the opportunity to be in the show that changed her life.

With the growing popularity of her work, Lim was able to record her passion in music to be shared with the world.

Charlie Catbagan is another singer of the band and is also a local radio host also known as Mama Char. Catbagan gained his well-known status on island when he participated on the voice Philippines.

Its not very often that someone from Guam does something like that and in a matter of episodes, Catbagan managed to rally the entire island behind him as he tried to take the gold in the show.

For a couple of weeks during the competition, the entire island was constantly checking in on Catbagan’s status on the show.

The island waited to see if someone from Guam could win an esteemed competition such as the voice. Although he did not win, Catbagan shared that the experience was enough.

“The island was super supportive. Guam is hardly on the map like that and I would like to think that we are going somewhere with our talent,” said Catbagan.

Joseph Chargualaf is another singer of the band. Chargualaf is a high school teacher by day and band star by night. He is also taking classes to earn his Masters degree in education. Chargualaf believes that music is very important to children’s development, even for high school students.

The band recently participated in the Red Ribbon campaign at the Micronesian Mall. The Red Ribbon campaign is an alcohol, tobacco and other drug awareness campaign. The band believes in the importance of this topic and was more than happy to assist with the events that took place.

During December, the band will also participate in Ring the Bells to be held on the tentative date of Dec. 16, 2015. The band seeks to help hectic shoppers feel a little more at ease with their music as the public tries to get their shopping needs done. The event is to raise money for local charities for families who need help this Christmas.

An alternative pageant featuring transgendered contestants was held on Oct. 21, 2015, to raise awareness and acceptance of the LGBT community. The pageant had seven contestants with two separate categories. One category was Miss Queen of the Pacific for the older contestants and a Teen Queen of the Pacific for the younger contestants in high school. Leah’s Fabulous Productions, a well-known contributor to the alternative pageant events, held the event on Guam.
Leah’s Fabulous Productions exists to offer transgendered individuals with a chance to compete in beauty pageants without sabotage from entities not embracing the lifestyle.

Leah’s Fabulous Productions motto is, “To spread awareness and acceptance with all walks of life.”

The new queen is responsible for attending Guam events such as Relay for Life and Feed the Hungry to show that the LGBT community is having a stronger influence in Guam.

The competition started at 7 p.m. featuring seven girls vying for the coveted crowns. The winner was to be determined with a grading scale of 100 points with five major categories: flower costume, native costume, swimsuit, evening gown and talent.

Among the contestants was Kylie Diosa Duenas, contestant No. 5, who took home best in all five categories. Duenas sported a representation of the Micronesian Kingfisher for her native costume segment and spread the awareness of the endangered species.

“Many long nights and a creative team made this costume come to life,” said Duenas, “the ability to work alongside such talented people in crafts really humbled me.”

The event also featured a talent portion. Contestants were judged in a preliminary showcase of their talents at the meet and greet. Among the contestants was Iowani, contestant No. 3. Iowani wore a dress made from recyclable material, and her featured talent was a dance.

Soon after was the questions and answer segment of the pageant. Contestant No. 7, Duenas, gave a moving speech. Her question was, “If crowned Queen, how will you continue to spread awareness and acceptance of the LGBT community?” The room was silent as Duenas spoke.

“We are already there,” said Duenas.

“Generations have passed with the LGBT slowly coming in its way to acceptance. The United States made same sex marriage legal. You came here tonight and that alone shows support.” The audience listened with such intensity.

Duenas gave a compelling finish promising to spread the awareness of the LGBT community not only at the event, but also throughout the island. She promised to wear the crown to many of Guam’s events and show the growing influence of the LGBT community.

As the night concluded, the reigning Queen of 2014, Arista, crowned the new Miss Queen of the Pacific, as the audience held their breath for those final two seconds, Miss Kylie Diosa Duenas took the crown.

Keiko Nishida is the Consumer Marketing Manager for DFS MidPacific and oversees all the marketing and promotions for DFS. She was well kept and everything in her office had a place. Her experiences and education set the backbone of her success with her past and her promising future with the business world.
Ms. Nishida started her career by Major Airlines in New York and was then offered a position as a Concert Promoter. Ms. Nishida has had the honor of meeting big names in the music industry.

“It was interesting to meet world renouned artists, such as Sting, Madonna, Rolling Stone, and Billy Joel,” Nishida said.

Being of Japanese origin, Nishida was responsible for making negotiations in Japan for her clients to bring their music into the Asian market.

“My job was to bring the concert to Japan,” stated Nishida. Being bilingual and able to make appropriate negotiations with Japan to boost the awareness of certain artists in Asia is quite the interesting accomplishment.
Additionally, there is the matter of her education, which was quite extensive. Ms. Nishida finished a BA in Japan and majored in Philosophy.
“Philosophy is the study of people and everything,” said Nishida “How can you make promotions that cater to their interests if you do not understand them?”

The role in the promotions category is to understand the shopper and make them feel more welcome and engaged. With the background of philosophy, you understand what appeals to them. This is the backbone of the division.

Along with her degree in Philosophy, Nishida took a year off from Japan and continued to make advancements with Parson School of Design in New York where she learned custom jewelry. This was more of a leisure course that had nothing to do with her career and because of this, she teaches a beading class on her free time.
