Silent Witness Ceremony: Remembering those lost to family violence

This year’s annual “Silent Witness Ceremony” will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Latte of Freedom in Adelup.

The event will be hosted by The Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence (GCASAFV), and co-sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General.  Governor Eddie Baza Calvo will also sign a proclamation proclaiming October as Family Violence Month.  Silhouettes representing those whose lives ended in tragic acts of domestic violence will be displayed during the ceremony.  Family members of the victims are also invited to attend.

In 2016, nearly 430 family violence criminal cases were filed in the Superior Court of Guam. Family violence was also listed as the top offense charged from 2014 to 2016.  Outreach and education can bring awareness to our community and help those who silently suffer and are afraid to speak out.  The “Silent Witness Ceremony” is a reminder of the seriousness of family violence on our island, healing for the families and the community, and hope for a peaceful future.
