On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, The University of Guam welcomed guest speaker Dr. Tom Brislin to present on the truth of film, the creation of memory, fake news, and how one’s cultural memory is formed.
Brislin is a UOG alumnus where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Secondary Education and a M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
Brislin is currently the Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a part of this year’s Guam International Film Festival (GIFF).
The presentation was organized by UOG’s Lambda Pi Eta Society, held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the School of Business & Public Administration lecture hall.
Attended primarily by communications students and Saipan students who’s film was a part of GIFF, students were able to learn more about their field of study.
Over the course of the presentation, Brislin stressed on serious topics such as the effects on social media on the younger generation, media ethics to portray ethical messages, and the significance of giving a voice to the voiceless.
The event was audience engaged where Brislin encouraged participants to openly ask questions, participate in discussions, and create a five- word headline that captures the essence of a story.
Dr. Brislin’s presentation left food for thought for the next generation of content creators and useful information that can be applied when producing films, writing articles, and other creative media.
