Students take to online classes amid COVID-19 on Guam

On Mar. 30, 2020 students and faculty at the University of Guam moved to online classes in-light of the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Guam.

In a memo released by Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez, Senior Vice President and Provost, the University of Guam announced the transition from on-campus classes to online classes for the remainder of the semester in accordance with Executive Order 2020-04.

For some students, the transition from in-person classes to online classes has been difficult.

Serf Mannaky, Theatre Major, expresses the frustration these changes have on him “As a Theatre student and senior, the transition is extremely difficult. I cannot perform nor present any of my works, which requires collaboration with other students/colleagues, use of the theatre equipment, and rehearsal space.”

Additionally, Ronald Del Rosario, a computer science major at UOG, encountered difficulty in his computer science classes transitioning into an online format.

Del Rosario said that his computer science class does not have an established Moodle site and he cannot access his professor notes and submits his assignments. “For some reason, my computer science professor doesn’t have a Moodle for my class,” said Del Rosario. “I’m not really sure who’s at fault since I don’t know how they are conducting these transitions to online classes, but the fact that I don’t have a Moodle for a major class is concerning on my end.”

Transitioning to online classes poses concerns for students and faculty, it poses an even greater threat to graduating seniors. The University is working closely with the faculty and informing the students to make sure they are doing whatever they can to get through with this pandemic.

Students should regularly check their gotritons emails for the latest updates from UOG.
